Prohibition of Speaking Without Knowledge

Ibnu Majah narrates in his Sunan,

Abu Bakr bin Abi Syaibah told us. He said; Yazid bin Harun uttered to us. He said; Abdul Malik bin Qudamah al-Jumahi uttered to us from Ishaq bin Abil Farrat from al-Maqburi from Abu Hurairah, He said; Rasulullah SAW said, “There will come to the people years of treachery, when the liar will be regarded as honest, and the honest man will be regarded as a liar; the traitor will be regarded as faithful, and the faithful man will be regarded as a traitor; and the Ruwaibidhah will decide matters.” It was said 'Who are the Ruwaibidhah?' The Prophet replied:Vile and base men who will speak in the affairs of the people.” (Narrated by Ibnu Majah) [1]

The noble hadith explained to us;

1. The dangers of saying without the foundation of knowledge.

Allah The Almighty stated in the Noble Quran, "And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned." [Quran 17:36, Saheeh International]

He (Allah) said again, "O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy. He only orders you to evil and immorality and to say about Allah what you do not know." [Quran 2:168-169, Saheeh International]

Thus, anyone who loves to speak using the religious words without attaining the proper knowledge, know that he is an ally of the Shaytaan, not defenders of Deen (religion) and not even defenders of justice nor upholder of Islamic Sharia!

2. This hadeeth tells us the importance of being sincere, at the same time also warns us about the dangers of deception.

Rasulullah SAW said, “Truth leads to piety and piety leads to Jannah. A man persists in speaking the truth till he is enrolled with Allah as a truthful. Falsehood leads to fajir and fajir [2] leads to the Fire (Hell), and a person persists on telling lies until he is enrolled as a liar". [Narrated by Muslim from Abdullah bin Mas'ud]

3. This hadith indicates importance of maintaining the trust and reminds us all of the dangers betraying trust.

The Prophet SAW said, "Wait for the hour when trust will be destroyed." A man asked, 'How it would be destroyed?', and he said: "Wait for the hour when the rule will be entrusted to those who don't deserve it." [Narrated by al-Bukhari from Abu Hurairah]

Rasulullah SAW also said, "He who is not trustworthy has no Faith" [Narrated by al-Bayhaqi in Syu'abul Iman, from Anas bin Malik, graded 'hasan' by al-Albaani in Takhrij Misykat al-Mashabih [35], asy-Syamilah]

4. This hadith explains, when society is in a state of chaos then shall them return to the scholars.

The scholars mentioned here are those who strictly adheres to the Quran and Sunnah by the understandings of the true manhaj of our pious predecessor (Salafussoleh) for they who know best the true meaning of life to our own. The scholars themselves has constructed a method called as 'Lau Kana Khayran Lasabaquuna Ilayhi' "لَوْ كَانَ خَيْرًا لَسَبَقُونَا إِلَيْهِ" (If there was any good in it, they would have preceded us in (doing) it.) If any action had goodness in it, then the companions of the Prophet  would have preceded us in it. So it means, whatever goodness there is, the Prophet and his companions have already shown it to us and now there is no need for inventing new things in religion is all aspects, including the muamalah (Islamic transaction), da'wah (preaching), tawheed (oneness of God), Jihad and others.

[1] Shaikh al-Albaanee graded it as “Hasan li shawaahidihee” (Good due to other supporting chains) in “al-Saheehah” (1887). Shaikh Muqbil also graded it as “Hasan li ghairihee” in “Saheeh Dalaail al-Nubuwwah” (568)]
[2] Fajir : A wicked evil doer, a sinner by action.
